John Simpson

Goldwell Hair Care Lead Artistic Director John C. Simpson’s personal philosophy is “See it. Think it. Create it! Find beauty in everything you see and do.” John grew up in the industry. His grandmother would take him weekly to the salon owned by his great aunt. John paints a colorful figure of the flamboyant woman with “flame red hair and nail extenders, who smoked a cigarette off an extender. She was fabulous,” he recalls. A decisive moment in his life came just before he was to leave for college. He decided that spending four years studying for a degree was not what he, ultimately, wanted to do. “Do you want to do hair?” his mother asked. “You’ve always talked about it.” A week later, he was resolved.

John enrolled at a major cosmetology school in his native city. The recipient of the 2008 North American Hairstyling Award (NAHA) has been a Goldwell Hair Care educator since 1997. He finds that teaching is as innate to who he is as hairstyling. “I always wanted to be an educator. I think teaching is really quite magnificent. I’m a motivator and love to inspire people. I enjoy seeing people get fired up after an Academy program or workshop.” When not on the road for Goldwell Hair Care, John works at the Pittsburgh salon he has co-owned since 1993.
