2 “Real Life” Color Upgrades

The auto-signature at the end of Sherry Ratay’s emails reads “Have a Colorful Day.” That’s what the owner of Salon Ratay in Lake Mary, FL tries to do every day at work, by formulating beautiful, flattering hues for her clients. Like most color pros, she understands how subtle color “upgrades” can truly transform clients—allowing them to leave the salon feeling like better, brighter and more beautiful versions of their true selves. Here are two of Sherry’s most recent upgrades—a spicy infusion for a brunette and a glamorous lift for an ordinary dark blonde!

1. Spice Girl
Starting/existing level
: 4
Formula A: Joico Vero K-PAK Chrome 2 oz. RB4 + Activator. Apply to regrowth, then pull through midshafts, alternating between four and six inches to create a rich, rooty brunette.
Formula BJoico VeroLight Lightener + 20-volume developer. Apply using the American Baliage technique, beginning at the nape and working forward.
Formula CJoico Vero K-PAK HLG (High Lift Golden Blonde) + 40-volume developer.
Apply Formula C between foils on the last three-to-five inches of each section.  Lift highlights to yellow/orange—approximately 35 minutes. Shampoo and dry the hair.
Formula D: Joico Vero K-PAK Chrome 1 oz. B7 + 1 oz. B9 + Activator.  Glaze all strands, process 10 minutes, shampoo and style.

2.  Bombshell Blonde
Starting/existing levels
: 5 in the back and nape/7 in the front frame area.
Formula AJoico Base Breaker + 20-volume developer.  Process 10 minutes, shampoo and dry the hair. Saturate strands with Minardi Luxury Color Care Pre-Wash and process with heat for 10 minutes. Shampoo and dry the hair.
Formula B: Joico VeroLight Lightener  + 20-volume developer.
Formula C: Joico Vero K-PAK Chrome B7 + Activator.
Beginning in the nape area, create foil weave sections and alternate Formula B and C, depending on the strands that need to be “enhanced” or “erased.” As work progresses to the front hairline, switch to back-to-back foils. Apply Formula B in the foils and use Formula C as a lowlight. Lift highlights to pale yellow, shampoo and dry the hair.
Formula D: Joico Vero K-PAK Chrome 1 oz. G9 + 1 oz. Clear + Activator.  Glaze all strands, process 10 minutes, shampoo and style.
