9 Hair Cheats From Fashion Week

close formula

New York Fashion Week —all of your favorite artists are breaking out their best tricks to get the looks they want—in a hurry! Here are some of the best tips we’ve collected during Fashion Week.

1. For ponytails that stay put all day and night, use elastic cording instead of traditional elastics. Elastic cording provides great tension and is thinner and less obvious than regular elastics. And ,because it’s available in spools, each piece can be cut to different sizes. (Spools can be purchased at craft or home improvement stores such as Home Depot or Michaels).
—Nick Irwin for TIGI at the Mara Hoffman SS ’15 show

2. Wearor have an assistant weara small GoPro or other video camera when creating looks so that you can go back and review exactly how it was done. More detailed than notes or photos, real-time footage is a great learning tool you can refer back to again and again.
—Antonio Corral Calero for Moroccanoil at the Cushnie et Ochs SS ’15 show

3. To create a look similar to the one seen at the Trina Turk SS ’15 show, you don’t have to do a full blow out to give the roots some lift. Simply apply product, tip your head upside down and quickly blast it dry using a paddle brush. Once it’s dry, flip your head back up and quickly straighten, then add the headband.
—Esther Langham for PHYTO and Beauty.com at the Trina Turk SS ’15 show

4. Never spray hairspray directly onto the hair. It creates a “mask” on the hair that changes the look. Instead, apply hairspray to a tool such as a hairbrush, small comb or even your fingers before applying it to hair.
—Frank Rizzieri for Aveda at the Novis SS ’15 show

5. Use mousse to create all your wet, slicked-back looks. Better than a pomade, which can become sticky and thick, and much faster-drying than a gel, a generous amount of mousse is the perfect product that won’t weight down hair or change its texture.

6. If you have a lot of hair and want to create a slimmer silhouette, an easy way to eliminate hair is to cornrow it away and hide it underneath the top layers. It’s all about elimination.
—Rodney Cutler for Redken at the Zimmerman SS ’15 show

7. Playing cards can be used to keep hair flat and sculpted to the head shape while drying. Cards are the perfect shape and strength and, most importantly, they won’t leave creases!
—Ramona Eschbach for Oribe at the Eckhauslatta SS ’15 show

8. On humid days, have your clients twist two sections of hair away from the face, cross in the back of the head and pin during the trip to work. When the hair is released, they will have a soft, wavy look!
—James Pecis for Moroccanoil at the Jill Stewart SS ’15 show

9. If you’re having a hard time getting that wig dry, you can cut down on time and eliminate patchy drying with the Daroko Wig Dryer. Just place the wig on top of the head and insert your blow dryer nozzle into the mouth, securing it with the clip. It dries from the inside out, and in 15 minutes, your wig is ready to go.

“This is an incredible product and I would recommend it to anyone who wears a wig as it really does work!” – Trevor Sorbie
