Chocolate Balayage—The “IT” Color She’ll Love
Milk Chocolate? Dark Chocolate? Why choose one when you could have both?! That is exactly what you should be telling your client when she comes in wanting a multidimensional, brunette balayage this winter. And that is exactly what Jillene Farr (@jillenefarrbeauty), a stylist at Seasons Salon and Day Spa in Orem, Utah, did when one of her clients came in wanting to be very dark on top and throughout, but lighter and more dimensional with her balayage. Here’s how she did it!

L’Oréal Professionnel Color Formulas
Formula A (lightening): Blond Studio Multi-Techniques Powder + 40-volume developer + ¼ oz. Olaplex “Olaplex diluted the volume down to 30,” notes Jillene.
Formula B (root color): DIA Richesse 4.8 + 3.0 + 9-volume DIActivator
Formula C (toner): ¾ oz. Majirel 8.11 + ¼ oz. Majirel 9.21 + a pinch of Violet Kicker + 15-volume DIActivator
Application
1. Start by applying Formula B, alternating each section with highlights and lowlights. Bring the color all the way through to ends about every third section.
2. In the areas where you want the balayage to go up higher, bring Formula B down about an inch and a half. This will ensure the balayage can process to its maximum ability without having to worry about the dark root color affecting it. Process for 20 minutes.
3. Next, rinse the color and blow the hair dry to prepare for the balayage. Section the hair into a T-part and start the balayage technique in the back of the head. Bring down about an inch and a half of a section and do a very chuncky weave. This will create a more dimensional bayalage. Then work freehand to paint on Formula A, diffusing lightly about four inches away from the scalp.
4. Saturate the last 3.5 inches of hair using a board and continue this process to the front of the hairline.
5. Take Formula A up, about 2 inches away from the scalp to create a heavier balayage around the front of the face. Use plastic wrap to balayage and process for 25 minutes.
6. After the color has finished processing, rinse Formula A and apply Olapex No. 2. Follow by rinsing out the Olaplex and wash the hair with Pureology Hydrate Shampoo. Rinse and towel-dry the hair.
7. Next, massage Formula C into the hair working from the roots down to the ends. Make sure the hair is saturated and process for 12 minutes.
8. Lastly, rinse Formula C and condition the hair with Pureology Hydrate Conditioner. Blow the hair dry and create subtle curls using a 1-inch barrel curling iron.
