How-To: Chocolate Lob

When a regular client of Edwin Ramirez (@hairbyedwin) stopped in for her appointment, she asked for a drastic haircut change. And Edwin, a haircut and color specialist at Kut Haus Salon in Claremont, Calif., knew just the chop her medium-length locks needed: an on-trend lob. The bold cut, paired with a fresh and subtle color application, made for a dynamic chocolate lob. Get the how-to below.

Natural/Starting Level: Grown out ombré on mid-length hair

Formula A: BLONDME + 30-volume developer

Formula B (toner): IGORA ROYAL 7-16 + 7-1

Application
1. Balayage Formula A using diagonal sectioning around the face and around the crown for a softer blend. Hand-paint V-sections throughout the rest of the head using Formula A, then process for 30 minutes with no heat.

2. Next, tone using Formula B and process for 15 minutes.

3. For the lob, cut her hair at zero elevation creating a blunt line. When you get to the front, angle forward to give a slight A-line perimeter. Finish the cut by point-cutting the perimeter to soften up the outline.

4. For styling, prep the hair with Oribe Royal Blowout Heat Styling Spray, rough-dry to about 80 percent dry, then apply Bumble and bumble. Defrizz. Flat brush the hair with a boar bristle brush.

5. Create waves using a flat iron and finish the style with R+Co Death Valley Dry Shampoo. For a more piecey finish, Edwin used Bumble and bumble. Semisumo.
