The first edition of the hairdressing world's most exciting new competition came to a close during Cosmoprof 2004 in Bologna. The NextLook Awards, a competition organized by Sogecos (the owners/organizers of Cosmoprof beauty trade fairs worldwide) and Estetica Magazine to recognize the world's best artistic hairdresser, just celebrated a tremendously successful first edition.

Several months prior to the culmination of the competition, which occurred during Cosmoprof Bologna, award participants received an "Inspirational Kit" illustrating the central themes of five trends for Spring-Summer 2004 developed by the event organizers in cooperation with a well-known New York-based trend agency. Participants then selected one of the trends and created a hair fashion photographic collection based on the trend. The award, presented at a gala evening event held on 3 April at the "NextLook Factory" - a space designed especially for the event - brought together the biggest names in the world of hairdressing and fashion. The event was emceed by Filippa Lagerback, a fashion model and well-known Italian television personality.

And the jury was composed of some of the most important personalities from the worlds of fashion and advertising including Franca Sozzani, Director of Vogue Italy, fashion designers Alberta Ferretti and Lawrence Steele and supermodel Eva Herzigova among others. Carlo Bay, for his interpretation of the Modern Africa trend, was selected from among the ten finalists by the distinguished panel of judges. The trophy, a hand-sculpted statuette designed and created by famous Spanish hairstylist/sculptor Luis Llongueras, was presented to Bay by hairdressing legend Vidal Sassoon. A noted Italian hairstylist, Carlo Bay is the owner of fifteen salons and a network of 80 chain salons called Carlo Bay Diffusion.

Another award was presented to the best up-and-coming Italian hairstylist to enter the NextLook competition. Federico Faragalli's beautiful interpretation of the Think Thai trend earned him this prestigious recognition.

The NextLook Award Night also served as an occasion to present three other very important awards: The Grand Trophy of the Professional Press AIPP was presented to renowned British hairstylist Trevor Sorbie; a special Career Achievement Award was presented to the legendary Vidal Sassoon and a Business Award went to Paul Finklestein, CEO of the Regis Corporation.

In addition to the presentation of these important awards the evening festivities also included a runway show featuring hairfashion looks by the ten award finalists and fashion by Alberta Ferretti, Cavalli, Fendi and Versace. The unique event, filmed by the television cameras of the Fashion TV network, carried on long into the night with dinner, dancing and entertainment by New York deejay Milly de Mori.
