Visionaries are those who dare to think and create outside the confines of time, society and the practical.  Behind every defining moment in history, significant scientific discovery and great work of art is a visionary thinker.

Names like Socrates, Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo, Michelangelo, Henry David Thoreau, Pablo Picasso, Paul Cezanne, Charles Darwin, Bauhaus and Andy Warhol would all be lost in obscurity had they not looked beyond the past, present, convention and physical to conceive something the world had never seen.

Damien and Sue hope Visionaire will inspire other artists to look at what’s been and what is with fresh eyes, and imagine what can be without the constraints of their reality.

The Cuts
For the cuts in Visionaire, Damien Carney looks beyond the obvious—the hairstyles of the 1920s and 30s—and finds inspiration in the timelessly modern lines of Art Deco architecture.

Carney uses a pivotal application around the natural head shape to create a strong core surrounded by varying asymmetrical planes of roundness and flatness, which mimic the straight lines and curves of Art Deco architecture. This pivoting technique creates the illusion of a perfectly oval face shape by elongating the neck, defining the jaw line and enhancing the cheekbones.

Texturizing is minimal and used only to refine. Softening or strengthening the face shape defines the fringe area. The techniques work beautifully on all hair lengths and textures, with longer hair resulting in a softer look, and varying lengths a combination of soft and strong.

Styling and finishing are kept clean and minimal to allow the haircut to work and function as originally designed. Alternative or haphazard styling shifts the various lengths around the head, transforming the overall texture and feel of the hair fabric.

The Color
For the haircolor in Visionaire, Sue Pemberton breaks with convention and practicality, and uses opposing colors on the Universal Color Wheel to create brilliantly shocking and unique color combinations.

Combinations of pink and green, copper and blue, and red and green— colors that are usually used to neutralize each other—are placed around the perimeter, diagonally and horizontally, in back-to-back panels, to draw the eye to the lines and curves created by Carney’s cuts.

On all three techniques, Pemberton includes in a third, more neutral shade to blend the contrast between the two opposite colors and make the combinations more wearable.
