It’s the time of year when women can cast away their faux-pas and their mishaps and look forward to a new season. It’s what we call Fashion Week and Mary Rector-Gable was there with her Choos on to capture all of the action at several shows. She ran into the likes of megastylists Odile Gilbert, Eugene Souleiman, Eva Scrivo, Jimmy Paul and Peter Gray backstage and got the inside scoop on the hottest–and hautest–hair fashions for the season.  While Mary (sadly) couldn’t make it to every show—and if there was a way to we know she would—we still have great friends in the biz who were more than happy to share their runway rundowns. Here’s a first look at some of the hottest shows at New York Spring/Summer 2010 Fashion Week.

THAKOON
At Thakoon, Wella Professionals Global Creative Director Eugene Souleiman and Wella Professionals colorist Eva Scrivo collaborated on a “warrior meets surfer girl” look to complement the spring/summer line. The finished style contrasted between tight and loose elements, which the collection encapsulates. A sleek, tight-to-the-head “seventh samurai” ponytail was sculpted on the top half, while the ends were left out in a loose, textured knot. Free-flowing, beachy waves were left down in back which allowed the look to exude a variety of contradictory elements that don’t necessarily blend, but balance. Colored extensions added a bit of dimension and life to help form the overall shape.

CHRISTIAN SIRIANO
Christian Siriano’s spring/summer line was a wild twist on an Amalfi Coast beachgoer. The ocean, coastlines, breaking waves—they were all represented in the clothing through shimmering silks in silver and blue shades. VP Global Creative Director for Aveda Antoinette Beenders worked with Siriano to dream up a hairstyle that emulated an ocean wave. So Antoinette and the Aveda team created a low, sleek ponytail adorned with a textured bouquet of “waves” that played on smooth and rough textures. The finished look was sleek and groomed on each side with a slightly rough, matte finish on top topped off with textured waves pinned above the pony. Chic and contemporary with a bit of attitude, the look is a perfect alternative to a basic pony—beautiful for evening.

RODARTE
Rodarte was full of tough chicks adorned in full-sleeve tattoos and clothing that was inspired by photographer Edward Curtis, who captured stunning images of Native Americans. To create a look that held up to the collection’s knits and textures, Odile Gilbert lead Dennis Clendennen and the Aveda team fashioned an edgy and daring yet natural style that really echoed the collection. The hair was roughed up and raked back into a braid-like cascade and pinned away from the face in a thin veil of black wool. The overall look is raw, hard, and organic.

CAROLINA HERRERA
Fashion Week mainstay Orlando Pita created a super-elegant updo woven with strands of beeds for the Carolina Herrera show. Working for Moroccanoil at the show, Pita began by adding Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream to the hair before blowdrying it and adding hairspray for a bit of texture. He placed a heavily beaded headband with trailing strands of beads on the part, covering the band with hair and weaving the strands throughout the hair. Finally, he twisted the hair and beads into a knot at the back of the head and tucked the knot under and secured it with pins. The look was fresh and elegant and complemented the fashions perfectly.

COSTELLO TAGLIAPIETRA
Costello Tagliapietra’s Spring ‘10 beauty look is a seamless combination of elegance, youthfulness, natural beauty and romance. So to complement the line, the hair was created by Sebastian Professionals stylist Thomas Dunkin to be both feminine and fresh. It was loosely inspired by the traditional roll style from the ‘40s with soft curls that sit just above the shoulder, Dunkin says. He created a faux bob built up texture in phases using a combination of soft, flexible texturizers and light, brushable hairsprays, using techniques that kept the hair looking soft and not overdone. The finished look was elegant and playful—something we’re sure to see replicated on the red carpet.

JUAN CARLOS OBANDO
Acclaimed hair stylist Didier Malige and Master Stylist at Crème Color Lounge Suzzanne Hawkins worked together to style the models hair backstage at the Juan Carlos Obando Spring/Summer 2010 runway show. Using Number 4 haircare, Malige and Hawkins created tousled, disheveled looks that perfectly paralleled the look and feel of the clothing, which were dusted with a bronze powder to emulate the feel of the Wild Wild West.  Both the hair and clothing took on a hedonistic feel, inspired by a mid-century John Ford western film, radiating a decadent sensibility and obvious sexuality.

LELA ROSE
At Lela Rose, celebrity stylist Ted Gibson was charged with creating a hair look that echoed Rose’s inspiration of the sun-faded palette and the splashes of saturated color seen at Venice Beach. Working off that cue, Gibson envisioned the models as carefree girls at the beach, fashioning ‘dos with tons of texture to appear as though they’d been in and out of the salt water all day. He positioned the ponytail just perfectly—not too high and not too low for a flirty, fun-in-the-sun style.

BADGLEY MISCHKA
The Jetsons and the fifties, while seeming to be completely disparate inspirations, were the perfect combination for stylist Peter Gray at the Badgley Mischka show. Working with Redken, Gray created high, vertical hair that counteracted but complemented the plunging necklines of the clothing.  He also mimicked the swept-out, wing-tip eyeliner by fashioning a swooping piece of hair that pointed out of the side of the models’ heads.

PETER SOM
For his Spring ’10 collection, Peter Som melded Lartigue photos, Japanese woodcut prints and cruise-ship life together to create a light and airy wardrobe any good girl would covet.  The colors were bright and the prints were bold and the hair that Bumble and bumble stylist Jimmy Paul created was flawless. He created a deep side part, twisting hair back into a taut bun, with some styles getting topped off with poufy headgear. All finished with a quirky pair of round-framed sunglasses, the look left a fun and lasting impression.
