Levels and Texture

As a general rule, says Joico Vero K-PAK International Artistic Director Sue Pemberton, you can lift hair one-to-two levels per volume of peroxide. So, 20-volume lifts one-to-two levels, 30-volume lifts two-to-three levels and 40-volume (the maximum amount of lift) will lighten three-to-four levels. However, your client’s texture may alter those formulas slightly. Fine hair lifts more quickly, while thick, coarse hair tends to be more resistant. Therefore, a 20-volume formula on fine hair might produce two levels of lift, while the same formula on heavy, coarse strands might only yield one or one-and-a-half levels of lift, so analyze texture carefully before formulating.
