Expand Skinny Strands

Session artists often have no idea what type of hair they’ll have to work with—they must adapt to whatever the models on set present. To produce va-va-voom volume on fine hair for the behindthechair.com On Paper cover shoot, artist Nick Arrojo demonstrated this technique: After drying hair with volume foam and a paddle brush, he crimped the entire head with a mini-crimper; then backcombed lightly. While the tiny crimps were undetectable on camera, they added heft and texture to strands. “Avoid applying too much product to this hair type,” says Nick. “It will just weigh strands down.”
