Body wave 4 long hair????
Posted: Monday, June 15, 2009 12:05:12 AM

My daughter wants a "body wave" on her long hair.  the hair is about 17" and about to her waist.  It's been a long time since I've done a perm and am wondering what rod size/s to use.  She has fine hair but a lot of it and has some natural curl/wave to it.  The look she is trying to achieve is the "beachy wave" something like the look of the olson twins.  A large "s"  pattern.  She just wants to wash and wear without doing anything to it.  I am licensed.  It's just been a while. Thanks for any help!

big rods!

i usually use turquoise rods for body waves, and use a perm for normal hair, checking along the way for a firm 's'. then i rinse thoroughly, blot thoroughly, and air dry(or cool dryer) to remove excess water before the neutralizing. i rinse with the rods in, and then remove for a final rinse. this makes a firm, yet large curl pattern.this way it lasts much longer than the old way of just lightly perming or using a body only type of solution. that comes out weak and limp in my opinion. at longer lengths, the hair 'pulls' the perm down with weight,so you need firmness to counter that, and to see a nice 's'.

take sections that are slightly smaller than the rod, and rock the rod as you wind it to the scalp, to evenly distribute tension and have the hair lay flatter on the rod. use pins to keep the band off of the hair during the process to prevent breakage.

black and turquoise are the biggest i think, bigger than orange.

good luck!!

TY so much 4 your response! I thought there were bigger rods, but our supply shop (licensed only) carried only the orange as the largest.  Also, "Option 2" (ISO) is the solution that was highly recommended to use.  I forgot to mention that we put a color in my daughter's hair but it was about 8 months ago and a wash out We used  "shades" by Redkin.  It was also recommended that I use peach & purple rods.  Purple in the crown and then alternate down the back with Peach being in the front.  I'm sorry for the long post, but my daughter is very nervous.  I am confident in my perming abilities rolling & such just not in the outcome of the actual curl.  My perms were from the 80's/90's era so I always used the smaller rods.  So IYHO the turquoise and black would be a better choice for what I described than the orange/peach or peach/purple? TY again 4 your help!

that brand of perm is what i use, and i also use the enclosed pre-wrap. it's a great product. i guess if you can't find the turquoise or black rods, the peach would be fine in a pinch, alt w/ orange better. if you can find larger, do that. i would eliminate the purple because you said her hair is fine, if it was more resistant hair,or more coarse i would alt purple & peach, but this will give you more of a perm look than a loose wave look. 80's versus now.IMHO.lol.

I personally would use ISO 1 if the only color that's been on the hair is shades. If she had layered hair, I would probably wrap the crown using horizontal sections with the larger rods and the rest with vertical sections and the slightly smaller rods.

I personally feel that young people view peach/purple rod perms as a true curl and not a wave, so I tend to choose those sizes for shoulder length hair or clients who want curly hair.

If you're not sure what rod size to use, since she's your daughter, why not set her head in whichever size you already own and let her tell you if it's what she wants? It's a little extra effort, but will be well worth it rather than risking all that long, gorgeous hair!
