extremly tangled hair (What to do?)
Posted: Saturday, March 11, 2006 10:37:35 AM
So, today I almost burst into tears for this 11yr old. She by far had the worst hair I have ever seen. Her hair was in a 5 inch circle dread. All the way down to the scalp. I personally think that an 11 yr. old shouldn't have wavy hair all the way down to her waist. That is way to much to manage for a mom or an 11yr. old. I tried everything that I could but there was no way to get it out unless it was all cut off. Was their anything else I could have done???

Tell her momma if the girl cant comb her hair and the mom won't do it, it needs to be cut.

THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES!  There isn't anything else you could do except feel sorry for that girl that she has lame parents that would let her hair get like that.

I agree, it will teach them a lesson for not brushing her hair. It's entirely their fault- you did nothing wrong and they know it!

There is one word that describes that:

NASTY

If her parents were truly being negletful than that is sad, however I wouldn't be so quick to assume that these people are awful.  I know long wavy hair can tangle easily, and if shes an active little girl it may tangle.  The idea of a eleven year old not having to have long hair kind of bothers me, I think little girls like long hair.  It does sound like a mess. I would say a couple of things though, you could have deep conditioned it, also if her hair is tangled like that, then she's used to people pulling on it, so I wouldn't have been afraid to really brush it out good.  Were they receptive to the idea of cutting it?

Vally, you are so sweet because you never think the worst.  The fact is, I have seen hair like this.  Hair can only get this way by not combing it.  For MONTHS.  Hair is not going to tangle and matt all the way to the scalp if it is washed and combed at least once a week!  You can deep condition all you want, the tangles are not going to come out.  I had a girl like that years ago.  It took me TWO HOURS to comb.  I gave up and told them to go somewhere else- it was FREAKING RIDICULOUS.

Then more recently I had an older lady- bless her heart she would just throw it up in a bun- never comb it.  I cut it off... It took me an hour just to work it away from her scalp so she would have at least 2 inches of hair after I cut it!  She admitted that she can't comb her hair and no one to comb it for her.  It was her idea to cut it short so it wouldn't be a problem.

so yeah, THE PARENTS didn't want to comb her hair- maybe she was a whiner that cried and they didn't want to deal with it.

Thank you, that makes me feel a lot better that it wasn't just me that couldn't do anything! I really did try everything that I could, and they just weren't open to cutting it, so that's all that I could do. Thanks for making me feel better!!!

What a lot of nerve, they don't want to cut it... well tell them to FREAKING comb it once in a while!!  The only reason they brought her to you was to comb it, not to get a trim.  That is a fact.

The trick with that kind of hair is to mist it lightly with water, and add a really good detangler + conditioner. Then comb, comb, comb.  I get alot of these clients, especially girls of mixed ethnicity b-cuz the parents don't know how to mange their child's hair.   To comb it out, I charge by the hour and the time is rounded up to the nearest 1/2 hr.  Then, on top of that, the client is charged for whatever service they receive( usu. a wash/blowdry/flatiron).  I always explain the costs B4 I begin, so there's no confusion on what they're being charged for.

something i've used is spray shine and a wide toothed comb with a bit of a point on the teeth (or a 'rat' tailed comb).  spray it on the braid, tangle, dred (dry hair) starting at the end of challenge and working up~spraying more shine as needed.

Thank you Mina2- I think you are rather sweet yourself.  I don't really think the best of everyone, in fact in real life I can be quite a snot, but I guess I have known a lot of people, and I try to see both sides of the situation.  For example I think that they probaly did come to her cause she was a hairdresser.  I guess I could see people I know doing that, if there kid was a real pain in the butt about getting her hair combed, i could see them thinking 'Oh the hairdresser is an expert, she'll know how to take care of it."  And bringing them just for that purpose, not in any mean way, but we are the experts.  I'll give you an example.  My former boss had the sweetest client in the world.  I think she was rich (she had an Au Pair) but just so nice, not snobby at all.  Well she always had her son come in the salon as well, and she would dress him in these expensive turtlenecks.  Well my boss of course hated this, because there a real pain, and you don't want to get hair on the nice collar, and there hard to turn down.  One day, she just kind of said "Oh your always in these turtlenecks."  Half jokingly but frustrated.  The lady was like 'Oh my god I'm so sorry, isn't that easier.'  I won't bore you with the whole conversation but she thought that it was actually easier, that the turtleneck was covering his neck so hair wouldn't get down his shirt.  She wasn't being a prima donna or a pain, dressing him all up when he went to the salon, she just had no idea.

m2 and remy blue:  I think you haven't come across the type of tangles we are talking about.  It's not "tangled"  It's matted like ONE BIG DREAD.  18 years of doing hair I think I could comb out some tangles.  The type of matting we are talking about literally is hair that has not been combed for MONTHS.  If not years.  Just like dreads- you have to cut it.  There is no way around it.

i did understand what you were saying.  i'm offering a suggestion for what might be done if it were an option.
i know with grooming a pet, sometimes a 'mat' will need to be V cut into, to be worked out.  and sometimes cutting or clippering are the only options.
