Home salon to cater to mom's so they can bring their kids....
Posted: Friday, January 12, 2007 7:45:36 AM
I currently am a home daycare provider and a former stylist.  I am looking to create a one chair business in my house (if zoning permits) to cater to mom's that have a hard time getting their hair services due to childcare.  I happen to be one such mom of 3 boys and it is hard to make appointments even if my husband is home for the kids.  So my idea is to use my basement that is already licensed for childcare (has a separate exit and bathroom) and have half of it be very comfortable for kids to hang out and play in while mom gets her hair done in the same room.  The kids could watch a video, do their homework, bring a happy meal for their dinner, etc.  Any thoughts on this?

To each his own, but would you have someone watching the children?  If you don't, I don't think it would work out. I personally don't want to sound like I don't believe in you or something, but  I just don't think it's a great idea. Sorry! I've never liked the idea of salons being attached or run out of someone's house. I know it works for some people though. I'm just IMO that's what I think.

Hi

Maybe one chair, but you definitely need to check if this is OK from a licensing standpoint on both caring for children AND cosmetology.

This would kind of limit your potential to only moms...

The thing is is that moms usually use the salon to GET AWAY from their choldren and as a relaxation gettaway- unless they are very young, kind of a hard sell unless you kept different hours for each business. There seems to be a lot of liabilities as well if you stock chemicals too.

I really appreciate your opinons.  I have been brainstorming ways to make a business that's unique and provides a service that isn't widely offered.  There are sooo many salons here that I'm worried about getting the clientele that I'll need to support me.  To clarify a bit, I would completely close daycare.  My daycare is currently in a daylight basement that is one long room.  I envision a 1 chair hair service area at the back and a fun/cozy living room and play area at the front.  So the kids would stay in the room with us, or if they were older could play in the back yard.  I don't think it would limit potential to only mom's, but I'd have an option for mom's IF they don't get their hair done to lack of childcare.  So I would market my service at mom's clubs and play groups, etc.
