Mother Lost, But The Touch of His Calling Reconfirmed
In my last e-mail, I said I would let you know more information as I got it. I have good and bad news. My mother didn't make it; she was evacuated to a "safer" area and drowned in a flooded apartment on a 2nd floor. She was 64 years old, and her name was Patricia George.
The last time I saw her I gave her a dry haircut in the hospital, and she would have liked color if it would have been possible. I am enclosing a picture of her, taken when she was 61, after I gave her a makeover. She looked 15 years younger. I did color, highlights, facial, makeup and photos because I didn't want her or anyone else to ever think that she couldn't look that good, and then gave her ALL the Elizabeth Arden makeup that I used on her so she could do it at home.
Now, I know that my simple country mother didn't do her hair and makeup the same way I did, or that she even wore it as often as once a week, but the point is, I made beauty something in her grasp. As a cosmetologist I feel that this is my calling... to put beauty in the grasp of everyone who'll have the courage to sit in my chair and ask for change! Comfort is a wonderful thing... but sometimes you have to give up the comfort of your "same ol' same ol' " and embrace the possibilities out there!
Incidentally, after seeing my mom's color and highlights, my sister asked me to do some for her when I visited my mom last year in the hospital. It was her first experience with color and she's 33 years old! Her daughter responded to the level 6 highlights on her natural level 2 by saying "Momma, your hair looks like peanut butter!" to which my sister responded to my puzzlement "It's OK, she LIKES peanut butter!". Well, my sister and her daughters and her husband, a Sheriff's deputy in Hancock County, MS, are safe, as are other nieces and nephews from that area.
If those of you at Behind The Chair would just keep the other hairdressers and beauty professionals affected by Katrina in your prayers, it will be a job well done and a gift well received! Don George BeautyBehr@aol.com
Refugee Touched the Hearts of a Salon in Texas
My name is Stephanie and I work in a Salon here in Texas, not far from Houston. I was working this Saturday, September 3. There was a gentleman that walked in and wanted a hair cut so I of course sat him down and asked him how he wanted his hair cut and so on. He immediately apologized to me for the possibility that he might smell bad because he was a refugee from hurricane Katrina. I of course told him that he was just fine and not to worry about it. My first client came in and found out that he and his wife and daughter had evacuated Louisiana and she wanted to pay for his hair cut, he refused and said that he was not a charity case and I told him that we were not a charity but that he has enough to worry about and this was the least that we could do. He then moved on to get his finger nails clipped and his toe nails as well, not one of the things that u would bring with you upon evacuating. We all refused his money and he insisted more than once that he could pay but we all refused. He left and said thank you and about 30 minutes came back. He had gone down the road and a local bakery and purchased two brownie cakes for the whole Salon. I cannot even begin to tell you how much we all appreciated what this man had done. He took the time to think about every one of use during his time of need. I have to tell you that I cried and hugged him and told him that he was a very sweet man, his reply was, no, I'm just a man that has seen a lot of wars, I hugged him again and he hugged me back and He left. It is the next day and I am still more than touched by this mans generosity. My friends and coworkers and still giving hair cuts for free to any of the refugees and we still feel like we can do more. I hope that everyone that reads this is as touched as I was by what this man did for me and my friends. God Bless Us all.

New Orleans Barber Needs Help to Rebuild My name is Excel Joyner my # is 504-235-7419 my previous address was 4411 Knight Dr., New Orleans, La, 70127. Stylist Tells Disaster Story to Raise Awareness This is Roberto. I need your help. On Thursday morning (Sept 22), Linda's mom & family were evacuated from Lake Charles. I called the city police to help get her evacuated. Mom is 76. She cares for Linda's sister who is handicapped, and her granddaughter. The police told me to call the civic center for assistance with elderly and handicapped. Busy signals were all I got. Calling the police back they hung up on me after reporting "we are in a state of emergency". They made it to Leesville, Louisiana, before car trouble near a Red Cross setup. Red Cross was helpful except when they returned the day after Rita (Sat Sept 24th) when help was most important. No Red Cross ...all locked up? Her distant cousin let them stay at her small 2 br home where they dodged two tornadoes during the night (Sept 23). Mom's crew was a disabled daughter, son, granddaughter, and her friend (whose mom stayed behind to care for grandma, a tenant who had no car and two dogs). At the cousins house was her and her two teenage kids. Then more family came with three small children. Around fourteen to sixteen people rode the storm & then the electricity went. Saturday mom called reporting no water. Food was being rationed. We contacted Red Cross & got some person in California. He gave us more numbers to call. This is when we were informed all three relief center were full. We were also given FEMA's telephone number which the recording informed us to "go online"!!! Thank God for Wal-Mart who sold them two bags of ice Sat. morning. No FEMA or Red Cross. With no electricity there is no gasoline or water / sanitation. They were given food which a neighbor handed out before it started to spoil. They grilled all meat to preserve. By Sunday all children had fever probably due to hydration. This family of 5 decided to head out late Sunday nite (while cool) to make it to their home in Crowley. My sister requires diapers and the woman they are staying with has asthma. Her asthma is worsened and when she called the hospital to ask if she could double her treatments, she was told they could not diagnose over the telephone. They were able to get the fire department who gave her a treatment but then left with the generator. People are fighting & stealing over generators!! Mom's family has now been told 5 -10 days before they can return to Lake Charles. They are also being told if you are not in a shelter you can't get food or water from Red Cross. They were informed the electric company had traveled 60 miles down to Lake Charles to get things going to support the parishes along the coast. Last news was Wal-Mart was going to fill food lists if possible. Still no gasoline and water is in short supply. The heat feels like 104 today with the humidity. We are very worried that not enough is being done. If you know of anyone close that can help them get gasoline that could help keep them mobile to get water and supplies. We are not giving to Red Cross. FEMA so far is a joke. They are a large disappointment and not helping the displaced people. Monday (Sept 26) Some rations handed out but per car. Not per person. So what is you don't have a car??? They feel forgotten. Now they are being told 1200 trucks are on the way. (Not sure if electric or supplies.) They are now saying 30 days before returning to your homes in the Lake Charles area. The importance of this letter is to get the word out so the small towns and communities are not forgotten. In our Indian village in Mexico, my father was a healer. He always reminded us of the importance of storytelling to remember and communicate the important things in life. The problems of life can only be solved by allowing yourself to see beyond them. PS I am selling small prayer pots to raise money for families like this. Successful Salon Owner Humbled by Hurricane Experience My name is Dallas, I am not sure what is going to happen now that my business is closed. Everything I have is invested in my salon. Two years ago I was listed as one of the 200 Fastest Growing Salons in the nation...Today I sit here with my mom in a daze. I have started over several times in my life, but this time it has knocked the wind out of my sails. I lived in New York and London in the late 70's and 80's, when I worked for Jingles International as artistic director of their school in the Empire State Building. As a show team member, I became well known on the show circuit. I have worked for many manufacturers over the years. I left New York at the end of the 80's and moved to Santa Fe, NM, and opened my first salon. Ten years later, I moved to New Orleans, and worked as an educational director for Neill Corporation for a number of years until I opened the salon of my dreams, Salon Du Beau Monde. My salon was 6 years old on the first Saturday of August. Well as you know it took one day to change my life dramatically. Although, I was spared the colossal damage, my salon like me sits in the dark. This is going to be one of my greatest challenges. At 52, with 30 years in the industry, I only possess my health and the intellectual capital, and a drive equaled to Lance Armstrong. Once a person who held his head proud, is now humbled to the point of asking for help. Thanks for listening… Dallas Alleman Salon du Beau Monde 504-722-3584 beaumond@bellsouth.net

New Orleans Barber Looks for Employment, Necessities for his Family My name is Corey Anderson. I am a licensed barber from New Orleans East (Fade Away Barber Shop). During the mandatory evacuation procedure, my family and I underestimated the time away from home we will be. Our home has been under 13ft. of water. We live with a family member in Conroe, TX. Unfortunately, we left with minimal clothing and money. We are grateful with any kind of assistance but have particular needs for housing, clothing, money and employment. Personally, all of my barber supplies were at home and are now destroyed due to all of the water. Regretfully, I am not in the barber union, therefore I will need help getting supplies again. I am currently looking for another barber shop to work at because about 85% of my clients are near me and are inquiring. Thanks for your generosity and time. I am Donald Bryson. Born in Detroit MI, I moved to New Orleans in 1974. I've doing hair since 1978. I had a bad accident and from 1980-1988, I rehabilitated myself. My brother and I work together and now we have nothing. Our shop and our home was devastated. So,I have relocated at someone's residence in St.Martinville,La. I love doing hair because it is all I know. You have no idea how much I have cried for the loss of the love of my life, doing hair. I don't have funds to buy products or equipment. I've been going to food banks, finding clothes, just to try to stay alive. So I ask if anyone could assist me with any beauty products or supplies. Where I'm staying, they have allowed me to do hair. I have a nice room but I don't have chairs or bowls or any of my expensive scirrors (joel). Your donation would be so so very helpful. Thank you my second family-the hair cutters! Path of the Storm; Hairdresser Had to Leave Her Preemie Baby at Hospital
I am so touched by the outpouring of support and donations from BTC. My husband is a hairdresser and we live in Long Beach, MS, which is right in the path of the storm. We have a baby in the hospital (preemie), so he stayed behind. Remarkably, our home is still standing and he is able to get food and water from a nearby FEMA staging area. My husband even brought his shears and gave out free haircuts. What a wonderful community you have at BTC. I am proud to name my husband as a member:

Family of 6 Left without Home, Jobs The family that has been affected is actually my boss's cousins. They are from Gulfport Mississippi, and they have 4 children ranging from ages 13 to 5 months. The husband worked as a blackjack dealer at one of the casinos that were demolished. The wife does not work, but attends school for nursing and takes care of their 4 children. The salon I work for, THE CUTTING EDGE in Beaufort, SC, is taking donations to help this family by raffling off a gift basket form our giftshop and salon products. The family has nothing. They lost everything. The sad part is the wife has not been in contact with her mother since Sunday by cell phone and does not know whether she is dead or alive. They were told that it may be at least 3 weeks before they return home. The five month old is the cutest, pudgiest baby that is all smiles . He wears size 4 in Huggies and 9-12 months. They family has NOTHING, maybe a few outfits, but mainly the clothes on their backs. They were staying in a hotel, but could not afford to stay any longer that's why they are here. I can not imagine what it must feel like to have lost everything. My problems just do not seem that important. This family and others like them are what matters. My boss's name is Lisa. She has no idea that I am sending this to you. She is a strong willed individual who would even do this for a stranger. She just needs a little help, so I am asking you for some help, even if it is a pack of diapers for the baby, or a toy for the children. I hope that BTC can help. Thank you, Stephanie THE CUTTING EDGE, Beaufort, SC SeXee2You@aol.com
Salon Lost in Mississippi My name is April and I am from the southern part of Mississippi. I opened my salon June 1 2005. It has nine stations two tanning rooms and two spa rooms. I am very proud of the salon, from the first day we opened we were swamped with customers but now we have had to be closed for a little more than a week and lease came due but I was unable to pay it since we had to evacuate. I know that I am blessed because we all got out of the area safely but now I am faced with the task of rebuilding my home and/or closing a shop that I have been planning on opening for four years. The devastation from this hurricane will be felt for years to come. April Mississippi mims123.cox-internet.com

Hairdresser Looking for Opportunities for Seven Displaced CoWorkers
Hi, my name is Gerry Berry. I live (lived) in Long Beach, Ms. Although I didn't lose my home, I did lose my livelihood. I worked in a salon called Ramona's California Concept which was located on the beach in Long Beach. Well all is lost now....the salon doesn't exist anymore...My children and I managed to get out 4 days after the hurricane hit us....We have gone to Houston to stay with my brother...Well yesterday was the first time I finally made contact with the salon owner, Ramona. There were 7 of us working there, all self-employed. We lost everything, the only thing we took out of the salon before the hurricane was our licenses. Ramona told me about this web site and asked me to find out whatever I could as they still don't have access to computers yet. She is wanting to find another shop (left standing, that is) and to rent it and said all we have to do is come up with equipment to work again. If there is anything you can do to help please call me or email me. The phone number at my brother's is 281 821 0372....my email address is gerryberry2@cableone.net.
Anything would be very much appreciated.
Thank You so much and I look forward to hearing from you

Paul Mitchell Distributor Owners in Slidell Have Lost Their Home
Hi Mary! My name is Glynn Cambre and I am Chief of Operations for Vanguard Salon Systems, a Paul Mitchell distributor. We are located in Slidell, LA, which was hit very hard by Katrina. Luckily, our distribution facility faired very well with minimal damage. But the owners of my company, Mark and Lisa Palermo, incurred incredible damage to their home, including a boat in their front door and 4-5 ft of water inside. They, along with Lisa's parents who lost their entire house and everything in it, do not have a home to live in and are staying with relatives. But, they will be back as will Vanguard as soon as Slidell gets back on their feet. Thanks to you and all your readers for all of your support.

20 Family Members in Her Home and Only No Business in Salon
I am a stylist in Baton Rouge Louisiana. I have many family members and Friends who have lost every thing who lived in the New Orleans & Slidell areas due to this hurricane . I have opened my home up to many people in the past week and more are to come.By the end of this week I will have had 22 loved ones in my home. I am devastated by what has happened around me and thankful I only lost power, tree limbs and shingles. If you could only imagine what we have seen just in Baton Rouge.I can't imagine the people who had a direct hit in Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana ! Chaos! There are Helicopters flying over us every few minutes. Being in this area is very scary right now, so scary that we have been locking our salon door (which is glass). Better to be safe than sorry right? I can only do so much to help the hundreds of thousand of survivors, we have gone through our closets and food and donated as much as we can.If everyone does a little bit it does help. I am still building my clientel, but this past week of work which was only 4 days due to the hurricane has been especially hard, I had only 8 clients all week. Can you believe?I have never been so slow nor has my co-workers. I figure if I make money I can still help suffering family members by providing a home to them for as long as they need. I know hair is the least of many peoples concerns around here. Understandably so as I feel bad for getting "fixed up" every day knowing that my neighbors don't have clean water to drink or food to eat I mean people are still trapped in their attics or dying in flood waters but if I don't work I can't help the people I love...Now the problem is I am working but people aren't in need of my services at this time of tragedy... All we can do is pray and donated whatever we can..BTC Community is a amazing family! On behalf of all hairstylist who are affected and can't even see what all of you are doing for them because they don't have access to the net, I want to say THANK YOU ALL FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS! You are helping those in need. God Bless!

BTC Member Missing Family I, too, was at the Premiere show on Sunday and Monday, after having been hit by Katrina when she was only a category 1 hurricane when she went through South Florida, where I live. It is now 1:17 AM on Thursday morning and I am still online trying to find information on my family in Hancock County, MS. My mother is very sick and only partially ambulatory, and my brother evacuated her to a friend's home near Waveland, where they all live. Sadly, Hancock County is a small area, and doesn't receive nearly as much press as Gulfport or Biloxi, but if you check the WLBT Video Player you can see that the devastation is immense. At this time, with no communications possible, I fear the worst. I am prepared to receive the news that my brother and mother are lost, although I hope in my heart that I am wrong. I'm not asking that you share the story that I am telling you, especially since I may be premature in my handling of this disastrous news, but only that you keep me and others like myself in your thoughts, and I will let you know more as I get more information. Thank you and all the staff at Behind The Chair. Don South Florida
Stylist Lost Home, Documents but Saved Family I am Terri, a licensed stylist from New Orleans, LA, and a Behindthechair Member. I read your article and I am a victim of the hurricane. My family and I lost everything, but we have our lives. We got out in time but we left with nothing because I have experienced a hurricane before but not like this one. We don't have any where to go we don't have anything. I did remember to get my license that's all I took with the clothes on my family's back I forgot SS cards, Birth Certificates, Check book etc.... things I should have taken I didn't. I got my husband, 3 kids, parents, and brother and we evacuated to Atlanta and we saw the storm was blowing that way so now we are in Chicago for Lord knows how long. New Orleans Hairdresser Starts from Scratch I am a hair designer from New Orleans. My home and salon was destroyed due to the hurricane. I lost everything. I am in the process of starting completely over. Do you have any tools (shears, blow dryers, etc.) that you can donate? Also, is there any type of assistance offered to salon professionals who were affected by the hurricane? Thanks Rachaun Julian New Orleans, LA Petuniaslw@aol.com
Hurricane Victim Contemplates Leaving Cosmetology Hi, my name is Sunshine Schlumbrecht. I was hit by Katrina. I am a licensed cosmotologist for Illinois, but I had been living in Slidell, LA for about three and a half months. I have been out of work because I am not licensed for Louisiana. I am in Baton Rouge now. I lost both of my homes, and most of my belongings. Everything my mother and I own now fits in our car. I am trying to look at the up side of everything, but it's hard. It's even harder to get my license for Louisiana now, because businesses are busy with other things. I am a hard worker, but now it almost seems hopeless to pursue a career in cosmetology. I have a passion for it, and it is what I have wanted to do for my whole life. I am also an artist, so that gives me a feel for hair and colors, and change, and fashion, and everything else in those two areas. Well you sent me an email to tell you my story, and there it is. I normally don't do this type of thing, but I gave it a chance. I could have told you a lot more, but I have a lot to do to get my life back together and start over from scratch. Thank you for your time. Sunshine Schlumbrecht Baton Rouge, LA sunangel_06@yahoo.com
Stylist Lost Everything, Family OK Spoke with Glen this morning. In Charlotte, NC, putting his daughter in school. His salon, home, all under water. Salon Owner Volunteers for Shelter in Need of Supplies My name is Casey. I am a salon owner in Shreveport, LA, where thousands of the evacuees have come to. I have been volunteering nights at one of the larger local shelters here. Maybe you could also ask your manufacturers if they could also donate shampoo and conditioner in small sample sizes. We are in great need of that. I know that request is not just about salon professionals but if you could just help maybe get some word out about that too, that would be great. Thank you for your time and I will see what help I can give to those salon pros! Casey Aperio Salon, L.L.C., Shreveport, LA aperiosalon@gmail.com
Stylist Lost Home and License, Looking for Work Hi! My name is Erin. I am or should I say was a resident of New Orleans. As you know, my city is under water, I've lost everything, even my car due to the hurricane. I still feel blessed though because I cold have been left behind and I have my family with me. We are currently living in San Antonio for the time being. I'm currently looking for employment at local salons; however, there is one problem, I don't have a copy of my license, so it's pretty impossible for me to do that. The phone lines for the whole state are down so there is no way for me to file for reciprocity. I love doing hair and have been doing it for the past four years, and I don't want to go back to school! :) If you know of any special emergency reciprocity that's being enforced, I would love to know when and where. I worked for JC Penney for the past three years in which I held the rank of number five in the salon and was also a master stylist. I am willing to work with someone as their assistant. I have no children and I'm twenty-five years old. I am willing to travel to any city that presents a good opportunity. This isn't a plea for work, I just need to think about the future and move forward with my life. I don't know when if ever we'll be able to return back to New Orleans. Please, if there's any info or help you can give me , it would be greatly appreciated. Erin New Orleans sweetpnt8@aol.com
Uninsured Salon Owner Faces Devastating Flood Damage Hi, My name is Denise. I have a two-chair Hair Salon in Tunica, LA. Even though I have not felt the destruction like so many others have, my shop has been flooded, and due to the power surges, no longer has air or hot water and I have water damages also. I own my shop and was not able to get insurance this pass year due to the fact that I was dropped because I have a tanning bed. So if there is any thing you can do I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you. Denise Leisure's Hair Salon, Tunica, LA DDS031@aol.com

Stylist Stranded in Biloxi, Beauty Student May Give Up Career Goal My name is Lana Richard, I grew up on the Beautiful Mississippi Gulf Coast in Biloxi and Ocean Springs. I now live in McKinney TX, however, my entire family as well as my husband's family still reside there. The devastation on the television is understandably difficult for me to watch. One of my sisters, Beth Bailey, is a hairdresser on the coast at Her Majesty's Coffieurs on Reynoir Street in Biloxi, she has worked there for 25 years. I am not sure if the structure made it through the storm or not, but clientele will be scarce for some time. We don't know the condition of the owner of the salon yet because the phone lines are still not functioning, we pray that she is o.k. My sisters home is o.k., but they are running out of food, and they finally got water today. I just want to make a plea to get the word out for your contacts to please donate whatever they can. My sister's daughter-in-law to be is (was) in beauty school in Gulfport, she was half-way through the program, and the school is destroyed. She and my nephew are talking about coming to Dallas to stay with me and just start over, I hate to see her throw away her career or put this kind of hold on it. She was so dedicated, and doing so well. She was working at my sister's shop whenever she could. I am in the Cosmetology Career Center Paul Mitchell Partner School in Carrollton, TX, taking the esthetics program. The Dean of the school told me about your association today, I am grateful to you for getting the word out to anyone who would like to contribute in any way. I thank you for taking the time to read this, and just really want to urge people to contribute anything that they can, people have lost everything. Thanks again for your time, Lana Richard McKinney, TX lk2710@comcast.net
New Orleans Stylist Wonders What's Next I am a stylist at Regis Salon in Lakeside Mall (Metairie, LA). I live in the city of New Orleans. Luckily I had the means to flee the city before the storm. I left with a few important papers, days worth of clothes and my work bag (including my shears, blowdryer, etc.). Though I managed to get to Anniston, AL, without a scratch there were many close calls, i.e., virtually running on gas fumes before reaching working pumps. After being glued to the news for the last few days, I've never felt so lucky to be healthy and alive. It breaks my heart every time I turn on the tv and see the remains of my great city that use to be my home. To see the people that are suffering without hope of being rescued breaks my heart. Though I have the love and support of my family, I'm scared to think of what will happen next. Where will I work? Where will I live? Can I ever go back home? For now the best I can do is regroup and plan for what's next. That's all any of us can do. Shannon Finney New Orleans, LA deeelitesf79@hotmail.com
Stylist and Daughter Forced to Live in Salon After Home Destroyed My sister lives north of I-10, north of Gulfport, one of the hardest hit areas. Her salon is now her home. Six years ago after my niece Emily was born, Dena built a small salon behind her home in order to be home with Emily. What a blessing that ended up being. Emily has Muscular Dystrophy and needs help doing basic things. Sunday night, or actually Monday morning, about 1:30 a.m. Dena called me and said she just had a bad feeling and they were going to drive to my house in Atlanta. At 5:00 a.m. she called me to try to find them a hotel. They had only made it to East of Montgomery. After I was unable to find a national chain hotel they stopped at a mom and pop hotel that was so nasty that they slept on top of the covers. They could hear people walking by the window. After further inspection, they realized the window was missing the glass. At about 8:00 am Monday morning, after only 2 1/2 hours sleep they had to find another hotel. After a couple of hours driving on a back road she called to tell me they were running from a tornado. I told her just like I had seen on TV to get under an underpass or lay in a ditch. The Evergreen County Sheriffs dept called me shortly after that to tell me they were on exit 114 at a gas station and that they were ok. The weather had got so bad they were stuck. They made it to a Comfort Inn where they stayed until morning. Tuesday they decided to make their way home. They had been in contact with their neighbor who had asked if anything important was inside the house. Dena knew it was bad. They returned home Tuesday afternoon. The salon was still standing but had extensive roof damage. The entire back of their house was gone. One mattress set in the front of the house was still dry so they moved it into the salon to sleep. She has lost all her clothes, she has worn the same clothes for 5 days today; she told me ice and water would be like Christmas. They live in Saucier, MS, north of Gulfport so I know it will be a long time before they get to her. She did not lose her salon, but it has become her home. It gives new meaning to feeling like you live where you work. Anything you can do to help is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for being there, Amy Atlanta, GA amyloomahaffey@yahoo.com
Mississippi Member Surveys Devastation I live in Hattiesburg, Ms. I live 71 miles from the coast and my city will never be the same. Houses everywhere are destroyed. People are searching for food and water. This has been a terrible thing but at least I am alive. Thank God for that, I pray for all the people on the coast of Ms and the people in New Orleans. May God be with them all. Tell everyone you know to pray!!!!! Heather Hattiesburg, MS butterflychic51184@yahoo.com
RUSK Design Force Team Members Need Support Hi, my name is Stephanie, I am on the RUSK design force. While at the Premier show I found out that 2 of the girls that are on our team (Mary and Leslie) live in New Orleans. They were at the show, working hard along side us while their homes & family were being devastated by this recent hurricane. We were all very concerned about what would become of the situation and many of us on the team that live in Florida offered our home as refuge until they could return. I am sure they will need more help once they return home. Anything you could do to help, would be greatly appreciated. On behalf of RUSK, I'd like to thank everyone for caring enough to help.
