… I was awake until 3 am trying to figure out how to help my salon family in Louisiana Alabama Miss, being a native of La born in the French Quarter it is heart wrenching to watch….I know how desperate the financial losses can be having come within days of losing half of my salon business do to a hurricane, the government allowed me to pay taxes over a much extended period which saved the cash flow and the jobs of 135 people. My losses were only due to extensive power outages, not all the other devastation being felt in the Gulf South.    Mary, the level of financial devastation to our La Miss Alabama can hardly be understood without having gone through it, adding to that the hopeless feeling of total loss, the heat the fear, the uncertainty, dammit what a helpless feeling. I would not have so much of the life my family has today if it were not for the people of south Louisiana, I will not stand by and see them suffer knowing I can help.  Its time to get our game face on, there’s work to be done. My estimate is 2500 salons( of all sizes) out of power and or destroyed, this is only a guess which includes the entire storm area.  We have to help people rebuild, please ask your BTC community to reach out and help.  By the end of the week I will have a solid plan in place, to answer the obvious question” How can I help".  Faith, calm, focus, planning, determination, disipline and community will over come...Talk with you soon.

Volunteering to do Haircuts in Local Shelters.

I have a salon in Lumberton, TX. We have about two thousand evacuees in Jefferson and Hardin County.  Our salon went to our local shelter and volunteered to do haircuts for the evacuees. We have hairdressers in our shelters that have asked for work. In Texas like most states have strict laws on licensing but we can get a shampoo assistant certificate very easily. I challenge my fellow hairdressers to volunteer at the shelters, and if you can help these people temporarily with jobs, even cleaning your salon, anything will help them. Bless you all for your kind hearts.

Center of Attention, Lumberton, TX

An Update from Sam Brocato
I just finished an amazing phone conversation with a man who lost his Salon and home in New Orleans.  Many of the details are similar to others that I've talked with, the big difference was this...After I said we could help him with cash, and job placement suggestions, he said thank you then, he reminded me that he would be driving thru Baton Rouge in a day or 2 (the evacuees are largely responsible for their proof of damage so videos in hand their going back in to assess the fallout) Then he asked me if he could come to my office and help... He reminded me that he knows the people, those on and off radar, then he started naming names, names I new but had not heard in such a long time, need I say more???
I'm humbled by this level-headed, focused, mature ambassador of all that's great about our Profession. Glenn Michael is his name, he really should be the face of this tragedy, I'll gladly be a hood ornament for the cause, but no one can tell it any better than Glenn. Dwight Miller thanks for sending Glenn our way.
I've also finally made contact with Mike Palermo the key person for Paul Mitchell distribution in the area, as well as a great new school in Slidell Mike lost everything as did his staff, students, and customers. Mikes coming thru BTR and we will have a brief meeting to make sure all our forces are aligned and that no one is left out. Thanks Laurie B. Spellman for connecting me with Mike. What I'm learning is attitude is critical to survival.
If any one speaks with Debra or Edwin Neill please ask them to contact me they are a key piece of the bigger puzzle they have all my numbers.

Updates and Optimism from Mark Palermo in Slidell
Hello all!
First and foremost Lisa and I want to express our gratitude for everyone's thoughts, concerns and prayers.  Our prayers are with all our team members as well.
Last Friday many of our PM family members cam home from work to a happy and normal homes.  Today, many of us are homeless, but, certainly not HOPELESS!!  We are in "full speed ahead" mode in restoring ALL our lives, our PM distributorship, and our PM school.
Here is an update.
Cherrie's home is destroyed!
Sara's first new home received more than 4' water - all contents ruined.
Lisa and I have a 26' fishing boat parked in our foyer.  All contents gone.
Waterline was above the roof line of Carol S.'s home. Everything lost.
To say the least, Slidell didn't survive the storm well at all!  I am committed doing as much as I can in getting as much assistance as possible for our team members, Associates, and customers.  Contact me and let me know how you are doing - PLEASE!
VSS received less than 5 inches of water.  We will be operable at the earliest possible time - hopefully within a couple weeks!!  YIPPEE!!!   The inventory, forklift, computers, phone, and all other distribution systems are a GO.  While our operation in Slidell is dormant, we have not had a disruption in service to customers not affected by Katrina.  Ultimate Salon Services, our "sister" company has picked up the baton with stellar effort in filling customer orders.  Our local and 800# have been forwarded to USS.  USS is authorized to handle all VSS customer transactions until Slidell operations are re-established.
Vanguard Cosmetology School didn't fair so well.  More than a 6' wall of water took out the southwest corner of the building.  All contents on the first floor are destroyed.  Words can not describe my feelings upon seeing our brand new and proudly standing Partner School so battered and tattered.
We are going to immediately open a new campus in Baton Rouge to provide a home for our Future Professionals and staff while reconstructing our flagship campus in Slidell.  We already have a few sites that have strong possibilities.
Our first priority is to create a sense of 'normalcy' for all our team members.  This means restoring homes and jobs.  Lisa, Glynn and myself have been working day and night in achieving this goal.  We expect to make progress each day.  And a 'one day at a time' approach is what it's going to take.  I will do my best to keep all team members informed as we move forward.  In the meantime we hope everyone stays well and safe.
   My temporary drop box e-mail:
All my best for you and your families.
Mark Palermo

Virginia Salon Offers Staples
Hi, My name is Connie Seagle and I live in Virginia.  We recently spearheaded a relief effort collecting water and health packs for the hurricane victims and will be sending them to United Methodist Committee on Relief.  We had a local beauty salon contribute a very nice box of beauty supplies that could help a beautician get started again. But, that is of course not UMCOR's focus and we did not want to send the box to them for fear it would either be discarded or would be put into the wrong hands.  If you could either put me in contact with someone that needs help or give me an address to a place where I could send this box I would be very appreciative. We want it to go for it's intended purpose, but just have no idea how to accomplish that.  Your help is very much appreciated.
Thank you,
Connie Seagle

Salon Donates Talents, Suggests Benefit
We have been doing free haircuts and shampoos for days in Hot Springs. We have hundreds there. I would love to see all hairdressers come together for a large fashion or just "bring a cut for the cause" and raise donations for the cause. Yes I have heard story after story in Hot Springs of lost shops. Farm Aid worked so why can't a benefit work in a central area?

Adopt-A-Stylist Suggestion
Greetings, I am writing to see if there has been considerations by the NCA to assist victims of Katrina via Stylist to stylist assistance. For example if a stylist or salon owner needs to relocate to another state -- Perhaps a stylist like myself could host her - give her shelter as she rebuilds her life. Or maybe even do an Adopt-A-Stylist program where a stylist/salon owner or an entire salon adopts another stylist or salon and gives them assistance in this time of their need. I want to assist the victims who are in our industry in a way that will make a direct difference. I am a stylist/salon owner and would like to reach out directly to another/other stylist or salon owners.
You comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Salon Owner Offers Equipment, Organizes Tool Drive

Just like everyone, my staff  and I are heart sick over the devastation from Katrina and how it has impacted on everyone’s lives including our peers. I have used equipment to donate and will be organizing a tool drive as well....  I am an owner of a salon/day spa in central Ohio, Springfield to be exact. Two years ago we underwent an extensive remodeling project and have had an entire salon set up in storage since. We had planned on listing the equipment on e-bay but in light of this tragedy in New Orleans and surrounding areas we felt the equipment would be of more use there than and money we could hope to make selling it. So with your guidance, we would like to donate the entire set up for a complete 4 station salon, including front desk, dryers, hydolic chairs, back bar shampoo stations and anything else we find that can be of use, shelving etc… We will be happy to deliver and help someone set up shop when the time is right for them and give them a hand at getting back to business! We are also collecting shears, clippers etc and having them serviced for anyone that needs them there..You let us know where to send them and they will be on their way! Our hearts and prayers go out to all of the victims in the gulf and our continued support will be there

Partnership Offer for a Studio Manager in Corpus Christi
In Corpus Christi, TX, we have a building with a Licensed Styling Studio.  (Neither my wife or I have ever been in a studio except to get our hair cut.)
We have a jewelry store (why we bought the building) and a studio apartment all in the same building.
This is all a bit chatty but it is 2:30 AM and I have been painting the apartment, getting ready for a Studio Owner/Manager to relocate to after the terrible devastation from Katrina. (I have 3 hours left to sleep.)
The studio is spacious, having an open ceiling area 40 ft x 25 ft.  There are half wall partitions around the nail tech area, and the reception area.  There are three dark oak stylist stations with black granite tops and black and chrome chairs (all new).  The barber chair is new and adjusts to suit the barbers comfort.  The floor is ceramic tile, with padded wood where the stylists stand.
The remodeling is very nearly complete, and we are making the signage.  There is no set decor, since we wanted to do this with the Salon Manager's participation.
Our building exterior is painted with a metallic faux finish of six coats (blue with silver & pink highlights) and has a warm friendly appearance.  Our location is on the same block with this year's "Best of the Best" salon award winner. There are several other upscale salons on the same street.  We have around 50,000 to 60,000 cars go by our building every day, and we are one block from the major shopping malls and it is one of the principal shopping and commuting streets.
We have a six foot message light on the street, with multicolors and all the programmable features.  We advertise on the radio (for our jewelry store now) and will advertise the salon too.
We are will to form a Partnership with the right person, and they can live in the apartment, without cost while building the business.
There are surely excellent salon manager/owners that have been displaced that may be interested in this situation, while New Orleans rebuilds.  Corpus Christi has charm and could use a really upscale salon.  We have the facility and all it takes now is someone with the know-how.
I have gone to this length because stylists are going to your sight looking for opportunity and I really don't know what is the appropriate way to approach this.   But then I guess there is no precedent and let us pray that there will never be another time like this.
Once the Salon manager is onboard they will be selecting  the other three Stylist/Barber positions.  We have a very talented nail tech on contract.  She will start in three weeks.
My wife (Elizabeth) has all this written up in a few short paragraphs (she is an MBA) and will be appalled by this rambling discourse.  You are welcome to contact her:
She will also register with your group in the appropriate manner, and fill out the forms as they should be.  She is the licensed owner of our Salon "Studio Young"  and the Jewelry Store "Elisa V. Jewelry" on 1117 Airline Road, Corpus Christi, Texas.
My cell phone is (361) 537-5134.  It is safe to call since I usually don't have time to talk long while at my work.

Positions for Katrina Survivors in Naples, FL
Living in Southwest Florida (Naples), our salon was only closed for one day due to the threat of hurricane Katrina.
My thoughts and prayers are with those who lost loved ones, homes and businesses. We are currently discussing fundraising possibilities in our area with fellow salon and spa owners.
As you know there are many spas and salons that were totally wiped out in this disaster. It will be months if not years before their areas are rebuilt. Hundreds of beauty professionals who are willing and able to work have been left without a place to work or clients to work on. Many people who lost everything will be looking to relocate and start over.
As a business owner who has positions available, I could employ some of these people if only we could be connected. Naples, Fl, is a beautiful place with a busy winter tourist season approaching. Things start to gear up by the first of October and stay extremely busy until May when the "snow birds" go home.
Perhaps one of the best things we could do is to help the survivors of Katrina get back to work and restore some normalcy to their lives.

Provide Home and Job in Charlottesville, VA

Hi Mary, I too attended Premiere Orlando from Charlottesville, VA with my staff and found it one, if not THE most informative show I've ever attended.  Now down to business.  I own a small hair color studio in Charlottesville, VA.  I need a hairstylist/colorist.  I also have room to house an out-of-work-hairdresser-due-to-the-hurricane for as long as need be.  Bottom line is I would like to offer a place to live and work for a serious minded professional that has no where to work due to the hurricane for as long as he or she needs it.  I never thought we would be using the words, "refugee" or "dysentery" in reference to the United States of America.  My salon is small, but very busy and I KNOW I have the work for the right person.  I've already been in touch with the state board and I'm waiting to hear about reciprocity.  If the person has the desire and the need, we are here.  Please pass the word on.  I love this site and it constantly amazes me.  I hope this works for someone.  Contact me at

Donating Their Student Council Fund at School

My name is Angie and I am an educator for Regency Beauty Institute in Darien,Il.  One of my students, Bobby, suggested the entire company of Regency donate our student council fundraiser money for the day be donated to the hurricane relief effort.  We have the students pay $2.00 to wear jeans, 2 Thursday's of the month, so we extended the 1 day to the entire Labor Day weekend.   OPI heard of our idea and has offered to match what Regency Beauty collects, dollar for dollar.  We're very proud of our students, and all that donated to this cause.  God bless the people effected.

Jobs in Naples Florida

Naples Florida is a beautiful place with a busy winter tourist season approaching. Things start to gear up by the first of October and stay extremely busy until May when the "snow birds" go home.  Perhaps one of the best things we could do is to help the survivors of Katrina get back to work and restore some normalcy to their lives.

Forgot your license?  Tip:
Anyone who left their license behind in the hurry to get out of Louisiana , Alabama or Mississippi, can possibly get online to their State Boards and go into licensures and type in their name and it will give their license number and whether it is current or not, maybe by printing up this page it can be proof of their license and make them eligible to work. I know Massachusetts has this available, at any given time you can find out if someone's license is current. I hope this is helpful.

Job Offer
I too would like to help our family. I'm a salon Manager for JCPenney in Maryland. Unfortunately I cannot house anyone, but if there are any stylists somehow relocated to this area, possibly staying with family I would be more than happy to offer a job. Also, if there are stylist in other areas that are looking for work, if there is a JCPenney salon near where you are, please contact me and I will do the leg work for you. I will personally call the salon managers in that area to see about getting you work, and if there could be a bright side of this you would also get a JCPenney discount to help you get back on your feet with new clothes and household items!

I have helped organized many disaster relief funds in our area. We in a joint effort with many salons in our area collected over $5,000 dollars in our little town of 15,000 for the 911 disaster.  We collected money for the Asian disaster and collect food and gifts at Christmas for needy families. We just recently donated hundreds of dollars worth of school supplies for "dress a child" in our area. Our clients are so generous and like many they just need an easy convenient way to get help to someone in need. Some give only a dollar and some give in the hundreds.  I know that we as hair dressers have more one on one contact with people then any other professionals. We touch so many people everyday. I have a method in place that helps salons collect money, record it and keep the money directly going to the Red Cross. It also gives us a way to record a combined amount of donations. I believe I can help our industry be one of the largest contributors in this country. Together with Behind the Chair we could set in place and procedure that our clients in our salons know for any disaster or local charity they will always have a place to donate to at their favorite salon. When there is a disaster, whether it be in their home town or anywhere in the world, this would unite our professionals in a joint effort we have never had the opportunity to do before.  I would like to talk with you about the details and see if a joint effort can be possible. This disaster is going to need help for many years so long term our industry can help so much.

Continuing to Find Inspirations in Mentors, Offer of Job, Donations
I just read the message from Sam Brocato.  I am a salon owner in Lee's Summit, Mo. and I use only Brocato products in my salon.  I have had the privilege of working with Sam at one of his workshops. He is an amazing artist and a wonderful man.   I was wondering if you could forward a message to him for me.  I am doing a fund raiser this week for the victims of the hurricane.  I was wondering if he or someone one his staff could help me out with a few things.

We are doing a fund raiser this coming weekend.  All haircut proceeds will be donated to help those affected. We will also be auctioning off a shirt donated to us from THE HOT MOMS CLUB that Britney Spears had bought.  Along with the shirt is a letter from Britney. I am trying to get the word out by radio this week. If anyone knows of a family or stylist that has been relocated to this area I would like to sponsor them as much as possible.  I have a full salon but I will do whatever it takes to help find a job for a stylist here. I have many resources so it should not be a problem!

Offering Jobs in Atlanta and sending Shampoo, Conditioner, Facial Cleansers

We are working with a small, upscale intercoiffure member salon chain. We hope to have about 50 open chairs among all the locations, upscale, commission salons, in fact will expedite opening of new salon location for this effort.  I’ll let you know more as the logistics are sorted out but we figure that stylists from New Orleans will have nothing to return to – they lost everything and even if they did not, they will have probably lost most of their clientele.  People are probably still in shock and bewildered and wonder where they will go, well we are trying to create these opportunities for any who are willing to relocate to Atlanta area and start a new life there.  Its up to them, but the least we can do is offer this opportunity.

In addition we are sending in some pallets of shampoo, conditioner, sprays and facial cleansers for the shelters so the evacuees will have supplies to maintain hygiene and keep morale and self esteem as lifted as possible.

Keep in touch I’ll let you know more about this opportunity as we get the logistics figured out.  We are tying to get some of the stylists there now to tip out a % of their commissions to those who relocate to these salons until they can get on their feet. Even if its only temporary, we want them to know they have a place to go and work and rebuild their lives.   I think your site can help spread the word about this opportunity.

Offering Jobs in Reno Nevada

I am a Salon and Spa Manager in Reno, NV.  I, like many people, have been watching the heartbreaking events unfolding in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  I have also wanted to help in any way I can.  I have made two monetary donations to the Red Cross, sent many prayers, and after reading the stories on BTC, I'd also like to offer any displaced cosmetologists jobs if they are able to relocate to Reno, NV.  I need at least 2 full service cosmetologists to work in a beautiful salon in a hotel-casino resort with excellent clientele.  However, I have six chairs, so I could take as many as 3 full time, and 2 part-time or on call.  You can reach me by e-mail at if interested.

Donating Home for Stylist
My name is Travis. I am the owner of CANVAS in Knoxville, TN. Thanks for the tip on the NCA. I'll be mailing a check today.  I came on line this morning after watching this disaster unfold for several hours on TV. It occurred to me that many stylists in New Orleans may not be able to return to gainful employment for many months if they are in fact even able to survive in that area at all.  It struck me that it would be possible for them to be "absorbed" into employment in cities and states all over the country. In Knoxville for instance the cost of living is quite reasonable and whereas it normally takes many months to build any significant clientele, I believe that local media in any area would be willing to list and report the fact that stylist had temporarily relocated and probably ensure an income from new clientele in a very short (if not immediate) time span.  My wife and I have one spare bedroom in our home that we could share and I suspect that there's enough love in this industry for one another that stylists and salon owners alike would jump at the chance to "adopt" a stylist. (I like the sound of that. "The Adopt a Stylist Effort".)  I just thought I'd share these thoughts with you. God forbid it becomes necessary but it certainly appears that it may.  Many thanks to you and your organization for your efforts in this grave matter.

A Home to A Stylist and Her Children
My husband and I have a modest home in Richmond, VA with two extra bed rooms and I own a moderately priced salon.  We would love to invite someone to live in our home and give them a job until they can get back on their feet.  We would prefer either a female hairdresser or a female hairdresser with a child, young school age.
Our salon, Images Main Street, is a progressive salon in the trendy Fan District of Richmond.  We are a drug free salon and do drug test.  At present we do not do relaxers but are not opposed to someone who does as long as they are proficient at them.
If you need more info I would be glad to give it.

Donations in Lieu of Birthday Gifts
My name is Katharine Cafaro. My birthday is Tuesday September the 6th. I have emailed all of my friends and family to tell them my birthday wish. I want them to know that there are so many people who need our help. I have a home. I have clothes. I have a job, food on the table, water to drink. So I have requested that nobody buys me a thing. I will be sending money that I receive for my birthday to all the families that have NOTHING. I hope it helps... please let me know how I can send this money... it would be the greatest birthday wish ever.

We have two MG Bross backwashes that we would like to donate along with a petite pedi spa chair.  The backwashes are in perfect condition, we have been keeping them to use in the future, but would much rather donate them where they are needed now.  We live in Sarasota, FL, and would be willing to drive them to where they are needed.  Let me know where and when.

Donating Supplies and Equipment
I am from Impressions Salon in Aurora, Co. I am printing your letter and taking it into the Salon. I will be asking everyone to contribute supplies, and equipment, whatever they can spare. I will be watching for your email to let us know where to send things.  This past Saturday, a policeman came into the Salon and told me my home was hit by lightning and there was a fire. For the last few days we have been meeting with all kinds of people to get the repairs done and get my life back to normal. The stress of all of this has been more than I can bear.  I watch the television and see the devastation of Katrina and I am reminded how lucky I have been. I was very lucky. We must keep things in perspective. I know in my heart I must help in some way.   Thank you for BTC and for your caring letter. It brought me to tears.

Looking forward to the fund you are setting up for the victims. I'm in Orlando, went through 3 hurricanes last year and combined they are not as catastrophic as Katrina. In lieu of exchanging Christmas gifts this season we have decided to donate to charity. Can't think of a more deserving one. Perhaps other salons can do the same, our donation may not be big but every bit adds up.

Donating Services; Refugee Gives Back, Too
My name is Stephanie and I work in a Salon here in Texas, not far from Houston. I was working this Saturday, September 3. There was a gentleman that walked in and wanted a hair cut so I of course sat him down and asked him how he wanted his hair cut and so on. He immediately apologized to me for the possibility that he might smell bad because he was a refugee from hurricane Katrina. I of course told him that he was just fine and not to worry about it. My first client came in and fund out that he and his wife and daughter had evacuated Louisiana and she wanted to pay for his hair cut, he refused and said that he was not a charity case and I told him that we were not a charity but that he has enough to worry about and this was the least that we could do. He then moved on to get his finger nails clipped and his toe nails as well, not one of the things that you would bring with you upon evacuating. We all refused his money and he insisted more than once that he could pay but we all refused. He left and said thank you and about 30 minutes came back. He had gone down the road and a local bakery and purchased two brownie cakes for the whole Salon. I cannot even begin to tell you how much we all appreciated what this man had done. He took the time to think about every one of use during his time of need. I have to tell you that I cried and hugged him and told him that he was a very sweet man, his reply was, no, I'm just a man that has seen a lot of wars, I hugged him again and he hugged me back and He left. It is the next day and I am still more than touched by this mans generosity. My friends and coworkers and still giving hair cuts for free to any of the refugees and we still feel like we can do more. I hope that everyone that reads this is as touched as I was by what this man did for me and my friends. God Bless Us all.

Donate Salon Products
I own a small hair salon in Belleville, Ontario, Canada.   Recently I attended the Serious Business 2005 Conference in New Orleans (this July) sponsored by the Neill Corporation and Aveda. The event and the circumstances around it had a profound affect on me and my connection with the earth.  And now, after seeing the devastation and hearing the stories of loss of the people of New Orleans, I was totally overwhelmed with the desire to give to those in need.  I am glad that you are taking the initiative to reach out to others in this industry.  It's true that salon professionals are among the most compassionate people on the planet.  My salon is small but we would like to help.  We are planning on becoming an Aveda Concept Salon in the next few months and in the spirit of the generosity of this company I would like to donate some of the product inventory that I will no longer be carrying to salons that lost so much. I would also like to organize some sort of donation box for our clients (who I know to be generous souls as well) of money and perhaps old products they no longer use to pass out at shelters.  It may not be much but collectively with other salon professionals we would make someone's future a little less uncertain.
Thank you again for inspiring us all in so many ways.

Donate Shampoo Bowl and Cabinet Unit
What a great thing you are able to do to reach so many salon professionals in a response to the devastation of hurricane Katrina. I will wait for more information on where donations can be sent. I do have a shampoo bowl / cabinet unit that attaches to the wall. I would like to donate this piece. Unfortunately I no longer have the hydraulic chair that I used with this set-up. I live in the Chicago land area. Can you provide me with an address of collection or where I can deliver this piece? I look forward to your response.
Thank you,

My name is Kathleen and I currently own Bear Elegance Salon - located in Mc Henry, MD  - This weekend - Labor Day - is a big weekend in the tourism area that I live.  I have opened a second location and was planning a huge Grand Opening/Open House for my second location this weekend.  I just printed off the flyers that you provided about not accepting tips and donating to the salons in the much needed relief areas.  I will proudly promote and encourage donations from the clients and customers who may pass through my doors this weekend and forward them on to the address you have provided.  In a time that is to be exciting for me - as I look around at my beautiful new salon - It pains my heart to think of the salons and owners who have just been devastated by this tragedy!  I will most graciously support this cause and as I am coming across things that I may not need or extras that I may have I will donate to the salons who may need to start over.  This industry is tough enough without unexpected catastrophes!  Thanks for listening!  My thoughts and prayers go out to all the people that have been affected by this hurricane.  May peace and God be with you!!!!
Kathleen Seaman, Owner,
Bear Elegance Salon and Bear Elegance Escape, McHenry, MD

Send me some posters or some small things we can post up maybe while I'm doing manicures and I could set up at a barber shop and do manicures and take the profit and send it to the fund.  Some type of display so they know it's going to the fund. I work as a independent contractor so this would only be for this cause. Just an idea!
